Large Brown Trout in a net is held in the running water next to the east walker river

East Walker River Fly Fishing Report : Bridgeport, CA – 9.15.21

The legendary waters of the East Walker River which flow right outside of Bridgeport, CA are running at a healthy flow of around 150cfs. The only problem is that the water temperature still touches the low 70’s during the brightest parts of the day. This problem should eliminate itself soon! The positive news here is the tepid water will follow the cooler weather and drop its temperature by quite a few points in the weeks coming. We hope the flows will continue to surge near these levels to help the fish get as big and healthy as possible before winter season hits. Stay tuned for more from the once fabulous East Walker River!

East Walker River Fly Fishing Report : Bridgeport, CA – 9.16.20

The East Walker River Fly Fishing continues to show us that it is indeed a big fish factory. Flows are around 70cfs more or less which is a very moderate and low flow for this system. Fish appear to be placed throughout the system and still in the usual spots where we usually find trout holding in a boisterous river such as the East Walker. As usual on the East Walker we fish a variety of large and small flies. SJ worms of different types, small micro mayflies, midges, and midge emergers seem to be the patterns that bring admirable fish to our hands. Streamers? Always! One must know the ropes when sticking to hucking the big patterns! Stay tuned as we see how the fabulous East Walker turns out this winter.

East Walker River Fly Fishing : Bridgeport, CA – 10.24.19

The East Walker is running at a steady flow of around 140cfs. This is a great flow for fishing except the East Walker is still pumping out a green algae colour from the algae bloom of Bridgeport reservoir from weeks past. East Walker River Fishing has been tough, however the fish are still in there if a fly fisherman finds him or herself passing by the banks of the East Walker just outside of Bridgeport, CA. The same patterns used in years past still hold true. SJ worm variants, Soft Hackles of all sorts, Green Caddis Worms, Light coloured Midge patterns with decent ribbing, and PT patterns just to name a few. Streamers and Mice? of course! Any Fly Fisherman who wants to put in the time with these larger patterns on the East Walker has a good chance of receiving what he is looking for. Look for the algae to be gone soon as temperatures across the Eastern Sierra cool down as November approaches.

East Walker River Fly Fishing Report : Bridgeport, CA – 3.5.19

The Fabulous East Walker River is only still flowing at just below 20cfs … As the river rises we will be on top of it for an update of conditions. The Fish are in there but at these flows we will stick to the Upper Owens where fish of equal size predatorize the river with fives times as much water eagerly awaiting the East Walker to add some volume to her current flows.

Bridgeport Fly Fishing Report : East Walker River – June 7, 2010

East Walker Fly Fishing Brown 6.6.10
Flowing below Bridgeport reservoir the East Walker River has always been a fly fishing dream. At a steady 192 cfs for the last few weeks the East Walker continues to be a pleasure to visit and fish. Water is clean and continues to be unusually clear for the East Walker. A great BWO hatch comes off around 10am and in certain upper sections of the river the fish absolutely go crazy for them. Launching themselves out of the water in sheer excitement to eat is a common sight during these recent hatches. For this hatch most common BWO patterns work. For something a little different try using a Thorax BWO, Etha Wing BWO, or CDC Indicator BWO all in #’s 16-18. Caddis are starting to make an appearance and this hatch should escalate in the coming days and weeks. Nymphing is on all day long but slows after around 1-2:00 pm . Ice Cream Cone midges, ChironoCones, T-midge emergers in black and pearl, and Grey Poly Wing Emergers are the bugs of choice all in #’s 18-22. Streamers get looks and sniffs on some days and chased down and eaten on others. Fish your favorite heavy streamer here on a floating line. One of my favorite trout waters to guide on, we will be out on the East Walker a lot in the coming weeks.
