Fly Fishing the gorge near Bishop CA

Gorge Fly Fishing Report : Mammoth Lakes/Bishop CA – 4.10.17

The entire Gorge is fishing very well! This amazing stream fishes like a classic Creek and is full of wild and eagerly selective fish. A small Baetis hatch comes off around noon while Midges abound all day long. Fish are actively feeding on the surface in some larger foam lined holes. Smaller Midge and BWO dry patterns will bring these fish up when not spooked. Attractor patterns also get these guys attention as there is plenty of larger Stone Flies, Ants, Beetles and other crawling bugs around. Of course if the tip eager action isn’t happening Nymphs and Streamers will get some serious attention as well. Contact the shop to Book a guided trip into this amazing destination. 760 873-0010

Huge Trout caught while Fly fishing the Upper Owens River

Proud youngster holds up his prize!

The Upper Owens River continues to flow at a tea stained flow of 78cfs at the writing of this report. This is the same flow rate as previous reports and not much has changed flow wise other than a slightly stronger tint to the water. What has changed is the snow levels… although you can not drive in yet, its getting close to the time we can. Standing water is collecting on the fields of the Upper Owens and snow is soft when the sun gets high and warms the area. Arriving up river is easy in the morning while the snow is frozen solid from the night before, as the sun rises it tends to get a little more difficult as it becomes more like a slushee hike around high noon. Fishing remains around the same as my last report as you can see if you’ve been following my videos.  Attractor patterns with SJ worms and sometimes eggs on hook sizes #8-18. Some underwater Midge and Baetis eating has been going on by the big Trout of the Uppers system… Try the smaller  midge/baetis patterns under a larger one on slower days in the clearer water sections. Streamers as usual, when fished correctly will take large trout. Fish them hard and stick with them to have success!

Lower Owens River Fly Fishing : Bishop CA – 3.28.17

The Lower Owens River is still up to a runoff flushing flow of around 700+cfs. This is emulating and forecasting the runoff that is happening and is to come. We have spotted Skwalla Americana Stoneflies along the rivers edge which is usual for this time of year. My guides and I hope we will see fishable flow rates by the time the Yellow Sally Stoneflies make their late spring appearance. We will see how this this flow continues based on air temperature and the amount of precipitation we have between now and summer.

Lower Owens River Fly Fishing – Bishop CA : 3.16.17

The Lower Owens River is experiencing extremely high flows of above 700cfs as of today! We do not fish the river at these flows unless we want to be swept to LA and become part of the system. This will be a flushing event for the river. When it’s down it should be in very good condition.. As for now don’t fish here… .
