Mammoth Fly Fishing : Upper Owens River – April 9, 2013

A few large fish remain here. They are difficult to find and hard to catch but there is a chance! The regular bows are active and throughout the system. Access is good with little mud, watch for muddy patches whilst leaving in the afternoon.  Mostly the same fly patterns still apply when tossed into the larger holes and runs. Large and medium sized Caddis worm patterns #14-18, Baetis nymphs and Emergers (bubble backs, triggers ect.) #16-20, Soft hackles #16-18, Prince Nymphs of various styles #16-18.   For dries various BWO patterns and Elk hair Caddis and other similar patterns are working well when fish are on the surface in numbers #16-20.

Mammoth Lakes Fly Fishing : Hot Creek – April 9, 2013

With its great fish population Hot Creek always has willing trout throughout the day. Even though it is still flowing low and slow,  hatches have been coming out in various spots of the stream, not quite a streamwide phenomenon yet. In some places the hatch seems to kast a good while and yet in others it last 15 minutes to half an hour. Of course, light nymphing is very successful.  Thorax Baetis #18-22, Small PT variations #18-22, T-Midges in darker shades #18-22 and various other slim Baetis and Midge imitations will take these highly selective fish. Dries; Small BWO patterns traditional and modern (thorax dry BWO, cut wing patterns, CDC patterns) in #’s 18-22. Crystal Midges and foam Midge emergers and the like in #’s 18-20 are samples of flies that have been working for us.

Mammoth Fly Fishing

Golden Dorado – Northern Argentina : End of March

My dream of catching a Golden Dorado out of the freshwater streams of Northern Argentina was fulfilled! These fish are absolutely incredible.  Hundreds of casts per day in the right spots was what it took to get these beasts to give some interest.. a cast a few feet off the shore or structure, nope, not going to happen. One must be a couple inches if not on the absolute very edge of the shoreline and structure.  Based on a very good recommendation we got a great guide Cesar Neme who commands you to fish the entire day! My best fish was a 6.5kg 14.5 lb of pure leaping fury.. I will let the photos do the talking…

Mammoth Fly Fishing : Upper Owens River – 3.7.13

The Upper Owens continues to reminder us of why we love too fish the Easterly Sierra! Flowing at 65cfs at the moment the Big Steelhead reminiscent fish are still moving around the river and being caught in the holding areas. These pointy finned critters are large and powerful! Be prepared to use your big fish handling skills when connecting to one of the these guys… once again these guys love bright and flashy patterns. Try Bright green Caddis Worms #14-16, SJ worms in larger sizes in purples, pinks, and shades of red. Oversized Midge emergers and Copper Jon patterns are also on the menu. These are suggested fly patterns we have been having success with. Other similar patterns will work . This fishery is a gem and not many people have been up there. Snow is virtually gone and access is good. Pics are very recent (as always)

Bridgeport Fly Fishing : East Walker River – 3.7.13

The East Walker remained at a very low winter flow rate for quite some time. It is on its way up however to 110 cfs at the moment.. we will see how long this lasts and hope it does indeed hold these flows and even come up .. April and May is the start of the prime fishing on the Walker w.Stay tuned as we will be on this water in the next few months for a majority of our trips.

Mammoth Fly Fishing Guide

Bishop Fly Fishing : Lower Owens River – 3..6.13

The Lower Owens was moved up to another great flow rate of 150cfs just a couple of days ago . Fishing has been great with some nice average sized fish coming out every day. A Baetis hatch can be seen once again in certian areas but has not arrived to be river wide. When it does occur very nice sized fish can be seen rising to these juicy bugs.   Nymphing has been steady and reliable with Caddis and Mayfly imitations getting most of the attention. Midge emergers also have their place right now during certain times and places in the river. One idea is to fish all sorts of green/brown caddis worms with a BWO/midge behind on your nymph rigs. We have had a lot of success fishing different patterns in this combination.  RS2’s, Bubble Backs and CDC Baetis patterns all in #18-20… #16-18 Caddis Worms in various patterns and shades of green/brown.. Poly winged Midge Emergers in dark colors #18-20 are all good choices on the bottom.  Stay tuned for the dry flies to ramp up the action..
